Ratan Tata was a prominent Indian industrialist and philanthropist who is credited for transforming Tata Group from a primarily India-focused conglomerate into a global powerhouse with revenues exceeding $100 billion. Born on 28th December 1937 into the prominent Tata family, Ratan Tata attended various schools, including Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and Riverdale County School in New York City. Thereafter, he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University in 1962.
Ratan Tata returned to India in the year 1962 and joined Tata Group in a managerial position. He rose through the ranks to become the Chairman of the Tata Group in the year 1991. He streamlined overlapping businesses, exited unrelated ventures and focused on innovation and globalisation. His major domestic initiatives include the launch of India’s first indigenously developed passenger car named Tata Indica and Tata Nano, the world’s most affordable car. Under his leadership, Tata became a global business with multiple major overseas acquisitions, including Jaguar Land Rover, Tetley and Corus. During his tenure as Chairman, Tata Consultancy Services became a global IT giant.

Ratan Tata led the Tata Group till his resignation on 28th December 2012. In the 21 years of his chairmanship, the group’s revenue grew over 40 times, from $5 billion to over $100 billion, with profits increasing over 50 times. He returned to the Tata Group as interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017. Ratan Tata is the recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

He personally held just 0.83% stakes in Tata Sons, the parent company of the Tata Group, alongside shares in operating companies like Tata Motors, Tata Steel, TCS and others.
